‘We will capture Buhari with our hands’, Boko Haram
Boko Haram has released a new video to commemorate the Eid El Kabir Sallah celebration promising the capture of Nigeria’s President Buhari. Notably missing from the video is an appearance by Abubakar Shekau the embattled leader of Boko Haram.
A man speaking on behalf of Shekau did not say anything about the whereabouts or health of the leader. The Nigerian army claims he was injured in an air bombardment last month.
In the video, assumed to have been produced on the Muslim holy day, an unidentified follower of Boko Haram issued a direct threat to the Nigerian president stating that the group will “capture Buhari with our hands”.
The man in the video chanted: “No retreat, no surrender”, claiming that the group is as strong as ever. Boko Haram recently attacked and killed seven Niger soldiers and there have been further reports of the killing of another ambush on Monday 12 September in which five soldiers were killed and six injured.
In a reaction, the Nigerian Military said, “the threat to President Muhammadu Buhari is a complete joke and dream of the century.” The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, added that “The so-called video is an attempt by the remnants to remind us that there was once Boko Haram elements. Empty vessels make the loudest noise”.
