Pastor Xu Shizhen, her daughter, Xu Yuqing and the three-year-old son of Xu Yuqing were all taken into custody on the night of 22 September. The police action was sparked by missionary work undertaken by the local house church that the Xu Shizhen and Xu Yuqing attended.

According to reports, Xu Shizhen and Xu Yuqing were alleged to have taken part in evangelistic efforts by Zion Church to spread the Gospel in local parks and squares. As part of these evangelistic events, the women preached, sang and danced.

Family members of the detained have been told that whilst at the station the women were separated from the child and transferred to other facilities. It is unknown whether they are under criminal or administrative detention.   According to China Aid, the religious affairs bureau sent Xu Shizhen a notice accusing the church of violating Religous Affairs Violations and ordering her to stop missionary work on August 23.
