Nigeria: Teenage Christian girl forced into Muslim marriage
A 13-year-old Christian girl, Hauwa Dadi, has been abducted by a Muslim, to be forcefully married without the consent and knowledge of her parents.
Hauwa Dadi disappeared from her home in Yobe State, north east Nigeria on Thursday 1 November 2017. She is in her first Senior year at Brighter Academy Secondary School, Gashua and it is believed she was targeted because she is the daughter to the former secretary of the Chrisitan Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Hauwa’s mother said her daughter went to help her twin brother push a cart carrying water home but never returned. After lots of inquiry in the neighbourhood, she was told that her daughter had been abducted by her neighbour and was taken to an Imam whose name was given as Babu Alkali Mamman. Further inquiry said Hauwa was kept in the palace of the Emir of Gashua.
Hauwa’s mother, who has been nursing her sick husband for over six years went on a lone mission to find her daughter. She reported the disappearance and abduction to the police inspector at the Gashua Police Command. Imam Alkali, who kept the abducted the 13-year-old was invited to the police command, but demanded that he be allowed to take the Jumma’at prayers before coming, and he never did. Instead the Imam’s lawyer arrived at the police station and told the girl’s mother she was needed at Emir’s palace.
Hauwa’s mother told reporters that she thought her daughter would be released to her, only to go to the Emir’s Palace and find the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Abdulkadir Aljamel already seated with the Emir who then interrogated her. She was dismissed by the Emir and asked to come back later.
Since then she was not allowed to see the Emir not does she know where her daughter is. “They do this to us because we are few Christians (in the community),” she said.
The systematic and serial abduction of Christian girls by Muslims for sex and and forceful conversion to Islam in Nigeria has continued without the Nigerian authorities doing anything about the trend in predominantly Muslim northern Nigeria.
Christian teenagers have been targeted and abducted like 14-year-old Habiba Isiyaku and Ese Oruru who was kidnapped in August 2015 by one Yunusa Dahiru, and taken to Kano where she was also supposedly married off. It is alleged that a questionable role in this abduction was played by the Emir of Kano.
