The Captain, accused the Christians of causing the storm by their prayers. He “believed the weather worsened every time the victims prayed” witnesses on the boat said.

The witnesses, 29 of them had survived the perilous trip in December 2014, said the captain and his Cameroonian assistant beat a Nigerian pastor on the boat with a plank. “They badly wounded him before throwing him overboard,” according to one witness.

The prosecution is asking for a 90-year sentence for murder ‘with the aggravating factor of “religious motivation”.’ Witnesses testified that the amount of €1,500 cash found on the captain were stolen from the Christians he threw overboard.
