Baptist faces demand to pay fine for worship
A Baptist worshipper in Azerbaijan is facing demands to pay a fine by the end of the year for meeting for worship without state permission in December 2016.
A Baptist pastor who was fined alongside him is still appealing against the charge, but Mehman Agamammadov from Aliabad is still awaiting a written decision in response to his own appeal. In spite of this the court is insisting that Mehman Agamammadov pays his fine by the end of the year. The fine itself equates to over three months average salary.
While objecting to the fine he has nevertheless managed to pay a third of it.
The two fines were handed down after police and the local official of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organisations raided a meeting for worship in November 2016 because the church does not have the compulsory state registration.
