Aasia Bibi exonerated after eight-year blasphemy ordeal
Aasia Bibi has been found ‘not guilty’ of all charges of blasphemy by Pakistan’s Chief Justice Saqib Nasir.
Protests by Islamist groups and political parties are being staged in major Pakistani cities and the beleaguered Christian community is braced for attacks.
Aasia Bibi was convicted in 2010 of insulting Muhammad in a row with her neighbours. She has always denied the accusation. Her case hit international headlines when the Punjab Governor, Salman Taseer was murdered for speaking out in support of her shortly after her conviction.
The killer, Mumtaz Qadri, was executed but is regarded as a martyr and hero by many Islamists.
