Acts 22:22-23:11 Riot
Again the soldiers had to rescue Paul from the crowd. The commandant decided to try to discover the truth from Paul by torture (the lash was a vicious torture under which many died or were crippled for life). Paul was a Roman citizen, a status which gave him certain rights and privileges, so when this was made known, he was spared the flogging. Therefore in order to discover the truth the commandant next called together the chief priests and Jewish Council. This was again unsuccessful, as by saying that the issue at stake was the resurrection, Paul divided the Council and another riot followed (the Pharisees believed in a resurrection, the Sadducees did not). Amidst all the confusion Jesus appeared to Paul at night, encouraging him and promising that despite the present circumstances, Paul would reach Rome and bear witness there.
